In the present European climate, many citizens find themselves in a situation of crisis due to the invasion of Russia on Ukraine. Thousands of people are fleeing their homes with their families to find shelter in the neighboring countries. That in itself creates an enormous change in their lives to which adults, as well as children, need to adapt.
The Welcome! project aims at promoting integration of children and young people with a migrant background in their new school. Forced to flee their own homes, immigrant children can feel at a loss about how to get their lives back on track in a new country. The Welcome! project’s main idea is to ensure equal access to education and chances of adaptation for children with a migrant background in a new country.
– motivation for the migrant kids to get involved and to learn – how to check their knowledge in objective way
– how to evaluate their progress – how to motivate the local kids to include the migrant in their activities
– how to encourage migrant kids to share their culture and language with us and teach the locals about their country
– how to motivate them to learn local language and be active in the school life
– tips on how to take care of their mental wellbeing, etc.
Mikołaj Rej’s Foundation for the Support of Polish Culture and Language, since its inception, has been working to integrate children with migrant experience within the education system, and most of the projects are devoted to children and youth. The Krakow’s NGOs together with The City Council form a coalition “Open Krakow Coalition” to support together migrants and refugees coming to The City. Now, in times of war in Ukraine this coalition is working at full speed and involves about 1000 volunteers on a daily basis. Under the leadership of Fundacja Reja there were 2 Ukrainian schools established in Krakow in the first week of war, an emergency program of integrating Ukrainian kids in preschools and schools on exceptional conditions and the language support system was put in place. Foundation team with other organisations is working 24/7 to support Ukrainian families and to help the kids enter the educational system and start “regular” lives in times of crisis. To have home and school far away from home.
